Old English 'stallion ford', or the ford of a person so named: it is impossible to decide. Also possible is 'ford of Waerna' where this name is a short form of an Old English man's name like 'Waernoth'. The ford is across the Meon.

... you can see up this valley ... as far as West-Meon, and down it as far as Soberton. Corhampton, Warnford, Meon-Stoke and Droxford come within these two points; so that here are six villages on this bourne within the space of about five miles.
